PET
VISITATION - HAPPINESS
It’s
moments from the best time of the day for them, and the dogs
are ready, their
happiness evident in the relaxed, wagging tails and the
impatient prancing as they wait for their people to get
organized and start their trek around the retirement home,
visiting with old friends and new. Today is pet visitation
day, and the dogs are groomed and dressed in their best –
official visitor bandanas in place, collars and leads hooked
on and toes dancing in place.
When they
walk into the recreation room, the dogs and handlers are
greeted by reciprocal smiles as the residents of the
retirement home wave to their favorite pet visitors. Some
love the big dogs – maybe they’re reminded of a
fondly-recalled farm dog who’d helped them bring in the
cattle, or kept predators at bay during years spent
farming. Some like the dogs who do the tricks –
walking on their hind legs, counting, spinning in place,
dancing or catching a toy tossed to them. And for some,
their favorites are the little ones, who are small enough to
give a tiny cuddle to as they snuggle on a lap. The Poms are
quick to return the affection with a surreptitious kiss on
the cheek of a resident or just nestling into the hugs
given, looking deep into the eyes of the resident holding
them close.
Just like
for those of us living in our own homes, the time spent with
a dog brings joy to the heart, even when it’s a weekly
visit. Pet
visitation is an activity at which our social, outgoing Poms
excel…and what brings more delight to one of our little ones
than making a person happy?
